Tips For Picking The Best Budget Laptop For Yourself

Even though you are familiar with your requirements for video editing software and laptop, it gets complicated and confusing when you look for it in the market. It can be hysterical for you to shuffle through the variety of latest laptops currently available in the market for video editing.

So here are some tips for finding the best budget laptop that is cheap & reliable. Give it a read to gain more insight into analyzing different aspects of buying the best laptop for video editing.

1. A giant amount of storage

The first considerable aspect is your laptop must have enough storage. It’s evident that when you are working on video editing tasks or slow-motion graphics editing, you will need to store all your edited videos. You already know that high-definition recording files can be pretty large, and your laptop must have few gigabytes to spare on the storage of videos.

However, not all best laptops within budget come with large storage capacity. In this case, you can look for an excellent SSD to go with your video editing machine. This hard drive alternative will provide the possibility to ram your files into an external SSD.

External SSD devices are more reliable and produce better accommodation for your media files than that of built-in ones. We recommend buying WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD or Kingston 480GB A400 Sata3 2.5″ SDD which will increase storage space and help improve your computer’s perfomance!

But if you need a laptop with enough build-in storage, take a look at our list of best budget laptops for video editing below.

2. Enough RAM

Video editing software demands a lot of RAM, and if your laptop does have enough RAM, you will face inevitable lagging amidst video editing. So consider buying a laptop with a good amount of RAM because it’s pretty annoying to slam shut your laptop while working. Finding the best laptop with a suitable amount of RAM depends immensely on your usage.

If you’re working on HD 1080p video editing, then 12 to 16 GB RAM is the best choice. However, if you’re working on more advanced video resolution like 4K or 8K, then 32 GB RAM is more than enough to provide the best performance.

Even if you buy a laptop with low RAM, you can easily upgrade it buying RAM for your computer from Amazon to increase your computer’s video editing perfomance.

3. Powerful processor

It’s necessary to purchase a laptop with a powerful multicore processor. If you don’t do this, know that all your efforts and money for buying the best budget laptop will go in vain.

A powerful processor is a crucial component in video editing laptops. It’s responsible for supporting advanced editing software, graphic cards, and a boost to high frequencies, more cores, and other necessities.

For instance, hardcore software for video editing softwares like Sony Vegas, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Premium will occupy multiple cores of a processor with the requirement of hyperthreading.

Therefore, buying a laptop with a powerful multicore processor comprised of hyperthreading capabilities is undoubtedly the best choice for video editing.

If your budget is not high, then you can go for laptops with AMD CPUs. It might not be the best alternative, but it offers excellent value for your money. If you want to know a better option, then keep on upgrading your laptop from time to time to keep going with the evolutionary trends.

In current time, the best alternative you can find for video rendering is a laptop running Intel’s i7 processor as it has a range of hyperthreaded 4-core, 6-core, and 8-core processors. You can also start with an i7-8750H to i7-9750H to polish your skills and then jump off to better and robust CPUs like i7-9850H or the flagship i9-9880H which can support up to 4K video editing.

The laptops supported by Quad-Core Intel i5 processors such as i5-8300H or i5-9300H are powerful and cheaper than laptops supported by Quad-Core Intel i7 Processors, including i7-8565U and i7-8550U. So the laptops powered by Quad-Core Intel i5 processors are the best option for buying a budget-friendly laptop.

4. High-resolution display

The high-resolution display is another critical factor to consider before picking the best laptop; after all, your work is related to video editing. A good screen display will help you to comprehend accurate colors and proper video editing. Besides, it’s essential to fit a host of toolbars and video-preview window, all together on a single screen. So a full HD high-resolution display with 1920×1080 pixels is recommended.

However, editing 4K videos requires 4K display, and it’d be difficult for you to edit them on a laptop with standard 1920×1080 pixels. That standard display will be able to fix pixels up to 1920×1080 only, and the resolution of 4k is 3840×2160, which is twice the resolution of full HD.

So having the upper hand with 4K display on your laptop is best for your advantage, but everyone doesn’t need to have one as the latest laptops with 4K resolution are expensive, and they consume a lot of battery. Don’t buy a laptop with 4K resolution unless you aim at editing 4K videos very often. Another good alternative is to buy a 4K monitor separately from Amazon. It doesn’t cost much, and you will have a decent setup with sufficient battery life.

For ergonomic purposes, we suggest you to buy an external monitor even if you’re not editing 4K videos to make sure you don’t hunch your body down to look at the computer. Buying an cheap but reliable external monitor along with an ergonomic keyboard and ergonomic mouse from Amazon can help save you a lot of pain ahead.

5. Discrete graphics

Your laptop must contain a top-notch graphic card that can promptly render information into high-quality pixels. The quality of the graphic card depends on the severity of your consumption. New generation processors with integrated graphics are sturdy enough for working on light video editing.

But if you want to work on the latest video editing software, you need a laptop with dedicated graphics that can efficiently work with hardware acceleration. In this case, it’s best to have an A-grade one for better results. In this case, Nvidia’s latest RTX GPUs and GeForce GTX are the few best alternatives. They have significant revolutionary development, reliability, and performance. However, the new GPUs with ray-tracing features are also best for improved efficiency.

Furthermore, the Radeon series of GPUs by AMD offers similar specifications and performance. The AMD Radeon Pro series is the best among other Radeon series, although the performance and reliability of Nvidia are unmatchable.

6. Ports

If you are working as a professional video editor, there will come a time when you will require a large functional monitor with a full-sized keyboard and a mouse or trackball. In this case, a docking connector will help you to convert your laptop into a highly functional desktop computer. However, an HDMI output for video and other USB ports for peripherals is also enough.

    • Hey, I’ll recommend Microsoft Surface Pro 4 or HP 14 touch screen 14-inch laptop. They are around $500 and will decrease further during the holiday season. Good luck!

  1. Hi I’m in Australia and my son is wanting to use an Elgato HD60S+ with his Xbox to record his gameplay and upload to YouTube. I am going to be the one that will try to help with any editing, so was thinking a 17″ laptop would be better Or 15″ and getting an external monitor for editing?

I would say that my son may want to game on the laptop at some stage also.
I am truly struggling with what laptop to buy as I am wanting one that is at lease a few years future proof and one with an easy keyboard
I have come across the following laptops but do not know which would be best for my needs so if you have any recommendations and or preferences to the ones I have found I be so grateful to be given some direction.
    Gigabyte AERO 17 YB-8AU1430SH
    Gigabyte AERO 17 XB-8AU1130SH
    Gigabyte AORUS 17G XB-8AU2130MH
    Asus ROG Strix Scar G732LW-EV033T
    MSI GS75 Stealth 10SFS-482AU
    MSI GS75 Stealth 10SF-483AU

    I’ve even considered the Alienware M17 R3

I am not sure what should be the priority and I have read reviews on the laptops and have so many conflicting reviews.

    • Hey, I would recommend going for a 15-inch laptop with an external monitor above 21 inches for editing (preferably more inches if you can afford, for extra screen estate which helps a lot during editing). The reason for 15-inch is because they’re more portable with better battery life and if your son is studying, the portability will help a lot and save him from the aches of having to carry a heavy laptop.

As for what laptop to pick, I would suggest going for ‘Acer Predator Helios 300’ or ‘HP Omen 15’ as they’re both great gaming laptops and also are covered in this list to help you decide.

      Wish you good luck!

  2. RE: Your # 1 Pick, an Acer Predator Helios 300: I bought one 2 years and 10 months ago for my main PC. A little after a year the USB-C port gave out on it. By 2 years old the right hinge cracked open along with the corner of the lid. I now hold the top and display together with a binder clip at that corner. Yesterday I discovered the SSD drive has a bunch of bad sectors that chkdsk apparently cannot fix and the number has increased today. I am accustomed to using a laptop for 4 years or more before opting for new hardware so I’m disappointed in the longevity of this hardware. It was a good machine for a while, but obviously not built to last. You get what you pay for, I guess.

    • Sorry to hear about that, most of the reviews are positive hence why listed. Since it’s an electronic device, there’s chance for it to break within a month as well (depends on whether you bought used, faulty or how you use & take care of it). Make sure to try to buy with a warranty next time which should make things easier for you in case anything breaks.

      Good luck! 🙂
