How to Choose the Best Mobile Phone for Poor Eyesight? A Comprehensive Buying Guide

Buying a phone that is fit for the modern day standards and also caters to your eye sight related issues is not hard. All you are required to do is to keep your focus on some specific features that you need the most in such a phone. Here are some special features to look out for before your press that buy button and spend on your new eye-sight friendly smartphone.

  • Screen Size: This feature is, undoubtedly, the most important one to look out for. There is nothing very complicated, though. All you need to do is to find a phone with screen big enough for a wider display and easy readability.
  • Brightness and Contrast: Colors and contrasts play an important role in making a phone friendly for people with bad eye sight. Try to buy a phone that offers adjustable screen contrast. This will make it easy for them to read the text and see other images clearly.
  • Speech input and recognition features: There are a few apps that cannot be magnified enough even if you have the best cell phone for poor eyesight. It is, therefore, important to have a mobile phone that has a speech recognition feature and allows of speak input commands.
  • Operating System: Buying a phone with special needs sometimes gets you in trouble because it doesn’t have an operating system that you’re not familiar with. We suggest you go with a phone that has a well-known OS (such as Android or iOS) so that you don’t find it difficult to use.
  • Bigger and elaborate Buttons: Touch pads and sensors are not a friendly option for people with vision issues. Try investing in a phone that has a big and easily recognizable round button at its center. In case you are buying a keypad based phone, all its buttons should be big and easily differentiable.
  • SOS and emergency considerations: Phones for visually impaired or troubled people usually have an SOS button. This allows for quick emergency calls so that they don’t get into troubles because of their eye sight.
  • Good Audio: If you are unable to see things clearly, you are going to use audio features of your gadgets more. This explains the need for a good audio system in a phone that is meant for those with poor eye sight.
  • Durability: Poor vision comes with the problems of being unable to locate the object and dropping or hitting things frequently. A phone for such people needs to be strong and tensile enough to last long despite being dropped too much.
  • Display Sensitivity: Some users are sensitive to certain type of displays. The most popular being LED screen displays which makes use of Pulse Width Modulation to control brightness. PWM is known to cause eyestrain & headaches which many iPhone users experienced after switching from LCD display iPhone to the OLED display iPhone X. Same has been reported with Samsung’s smartphones as they mostly use LED displays on their smartphones.

If you’re a victim to display sensitivity, it’s best to buy a smartphone with LCD display

Other than these features, you should also focus on the generic features of a good mobile including its battery life, warranty, and other such things.

Cell Phone for Poor Eyesight FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

When it comes to buying the best cell phone for vision impaired people, you may have a few simple questions. Given below are the suitable answers to some of your most asked questions:

Which cell phone has the largest screen?

We have tried to go only for the large mobile phones for visually impaired with good screens. Even when the flip phones have smaller screens, their display type and its kind does all the justice. However, if you really want a huge screen, we suggest you go for any of the Samsung Notes or for the Google Plus mobile phone we have added to this list.

Which mobile phone screen is easy on the eyes?

LCD display smartphones such as the iPhone SE 2020 or Motorola Moto G6 plus are considered to be easiest on the eyes. Whereas, LED display phones make use of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control brightness which we don’t notice, but is enough to cause headaches or eyestrain in some people. If you’re not a victim to display sensitivity, then this does not apply to you.

Can mobile phone cause eye problems?

Just like anything in life, if you do too much of it – it can cause problems. Same goes for electronic devices, if used too much without moderation – it can cause you eye issues such as dry eyes. However, individuals who are very sensitive to screens are likely to get affected by mobile phones the most even from slight usage. It is, therefore, advisable to try reducing your mobile phone usage as much as you can especially if your eyes are sensitive.

No one can guarantee you a perfectly protected eyesight no matter what. Screens are sure to affect your eyes in one way or the other. To protect your eyesight, it’s best to cut screen usage whenever possible and only use when needed such as when working or chatting with loved ones far away from you. Always make sure to blink as much as you can, follow the 20/20 rule when using a phone which involves a break of 20 seconds looking at a faraway object after 20 minutes of usage. This gives your eyes the time to heal and repair the damage that is caused to them by screens.

  1. I couldn’t think of a worst option for poor eyesight than the iPhone SE, as it has the infamous “retina” display, the main cause of eyestrain for most people. You know why these Apple displays are called “retina”? Because that’s exactly the part of your body you’ll compromise by using this ridiculously high resolution. You’ve totally missed the only options that makes sense in this list which are the e-paper smartphones.

    • E-ink display smartphones are good for people with sensitive eyes (not necessarily poor eyesight), however there’s still time before the technology can catch up as existing e-ink phones are very inferior.
