One of the biggest advantages of the Android operating system is that you can make huge changes to the look and feel of the home screen. There are some deep customization options available. With the help of a few apps, you can actually modify the home screen to look exactly the way you want it to.
In this article, I will take a closer look at apps which you can use to customize your Android home screen. I use these apps all the time on my Android smartphone. And the best part is that they are available for free from the Google Play Store! So read further and try out as many apps as you can.
The fastest way that you can completely change the look of your device is to install a launcher app. Apart from looks, launchers can change the way you use your smartphone as well. My preferred launcher at the moment is the Nova Launcher. This is a free launcher (paid version available) that allows you to tweak many visual and gesture settings on your home screen.
With the Nova Launcher, you can select the number of rows and columns of icons you wish to have on your home screen. You can also mess with the size of the icons as well. You can also change the Google search icon that appears at the top.
KWGT (Kustom Widget Maker) is an app that allows you to create your own style of widgets. You can start from scratch on a blank canvas and add features such as time, battery percentage, and weather to name a few. You can further customize the color, shape and size of these widgets. The options are endless and fun too.
The app has a bit of a steep learning curve. It takes time to understand exactly what you are doing here. The quickest way to get going is to download some presets that can be installed to work with KWGT. One cool preset pack that I have tried out is the Huk KWGT add-on. The widgets are very funky and minimal.
The Play Store is filled with icon packs. Nova Launcher (and most launchers) allow you to change your set of icons. If you are bored with the way your Facebook and Instagram icons look, then you can just select an icon pack in the Play Store, download, install, and then activate. Your home screen will actually look significantly different from doing this.
Some of my personal favourite packs are Whicons, CandyCons, and Moonrise. A cool feature with Nova Launcher is that you can select different icon packs for each individual app. You can use the Whicon icon for Facebook and the Candycon icon for Instagram.
