Top 5 Android Apps for Social Networking in 2018

The way we interact with each other online has changed dramatically over the past few years. We are long past those simple chat rooms that are filled with text. Nowadays, we share a photo or video stories over social networks. This short form blogging and vlogging have taken the world by storm. The best part is that the tools needed to create this powerful media is located in your pocket.

In this article, I’m going to explore my top 5 Android apps for social networking. The main reason I chose Android is because most of the top smartphones of 2017 are Android devices. This is my most current 2018 list of apps that I use to engage with people online. I have also included some apps that I use to create or curate content, which is absolutely vital when socializing online.

Twitter

Twitter has been around for more than a decade now. It initially launched a few years after Facebook had launched. The whole behind twitter is microblogging. Instead of creating a complex post, you could just share an update that will be seen by your followers, as well as other users who discover your post.

Twitter

So many social networks have come and gone in the last decade, but Twitter still manages to stay strong. One of the main reasons for this is that Twitter is a very engaging platform to be in. You can quickly start up a conversation with anyone in the network, including celebrities. Twitter allows you to follow or unfollow people on Twitter, that are of interest. You can even follow Donald Trump as he goes on one of his crazy rants and then expresses your views towards some of his tweets.

Twitter on Android is a very polished and refined app that has a super clean interface with an abundance of features. The app really has evolved over the last few years. This is due to Twitter expanding its tweet limit, as well as adding new features such as lists and follow up tweets. These features, along with a dark theme (my personal favorite) are readily available in the app.

The Twitter app also notifies you once every now and again of important tweets that you may have missed. Once you tap on that notification, you will be able to view all these tweets in card format. You can then just quickly swipe to move along to the next card/highlight. Great way to keep up to date with Twitter when absent from the app.

Instagram

Instagram was launched back in 2010 and served as a photo sharing app for iOS devices. Two years later, the app found its way over to the Android platform where it continued to grow at a rapid rate. This successful app is now owned by Facebook, who, over the past few years have contributed largely to its current success.

Instagram

Instagram has a similar social concept/algorithm to Twitter. Users follow each other in order to receive updates. These Updates come in the form of Pictures. In Twitter, you could post an update by compiling a tweet made of text, video, or Pictures. But on Instagram, you can only post either pictures or short videos. Another great feature of Instagram is being able to quickly edit your picture before you post it online. You can simply select one of the many presets available which will significantly alter your picture, or you can go in manually and adjust your photo to your exact liking.

Instagram has slowly become one of the most popular apps on Android recently. Apart from being able to share stories on Instagram like you would on Snapchat (stories which last 24 hours), the Instagram network is actually very engaging. It is extremely easy to interact and socialize with people from all over the world and locally. This gives way to great business opportunity in terms of marketing and networking.

Reddit

Social news and Web content website Reddit has been around since 2005. The format of Reddit is somewhat similar to a default forum thread. But unlike a forum, Reddit isn’t restricted to a single niche. Instead, the website is made up of subreddits. A subreddit is topic of discussion based on a specific niche. All these subreddits and topics and interests all combine to give you a platform that is filled with information.

Reddit

The information on Reddit is uploaded by its users, which is then further moderated. As a user, you can submit a post in the form of text, picture, or link. Once you have submitted a post, other users can either upvote or downvote your post. The more upvotes, the more popular your posts become, which will then move your post to the top of the list of daily posts. As a user, the more upvotes you receive, the more your karma increases, giving you more authority on the site.

Reddit for Android is a sweet gem of an app. It is almost unheard by most people. One of the reasons for this is because the web version of Reddit can be a little daunting at first and also not everyone’s cup of tea. But the Android version is much more minimal, yet with an abundance of features. When you open up the app, you will be greeted by some expertly curated content.

You will never find a dull moment with the Reddit app as well. Most content that you have already seen will probably never be repeated within your feed.

Regrann for Instagram

Regrann is a simple Android app that assists you in reposting other users posts on Instagram. Reposting (or Regrann, as the app would call it) is becoming ever so popular on Instagram. Reposting someone else’s original post and tagging them is very similar to retweeting. Unfortunately, the native Instagram app does not give you the option to re-post. That is why you have Regrann.

To use Regrann, you just simply need to copy the link to your post of choice. Regrann will automatically open and extract the pictures from the post. You can then choose to save the pictures to your camera roll, or you can go straight back to Instagram and repost. The text from the original post will also be automatically copied so you can simply paste the text into your new re-post as well.

Canva

Canva is another free social networking tool similar to Regrann. Canva delivers powerful graphic design capabilities to your Android device. You can create amazing posters and signs and even memes from scratch. With Canva you will be able to add another layer of creativity to your posts over social networks.

One of the highlights of Canva is its templates. There are specific templates for a desired social network. You can choose an Instagram 1:1 ratio template if you wish to create an Instagram post. There are also Twitter and Facebook templates available as well. You can also take things further by creating movie posters, invites, flyers, and even business cards.

Who Should Be Using These Apps?

If you are fairly new to social networking, then you should at least try out Instagram. Instagram has a more personal feel to it and it is growing really fast at the moment. Twitter, on the other hand, is great for those who are in search of news and updates on a global scale. Reddit is a bit more in-depth and is for more advanced social networking. The content on Reddit might be all fun and good, but the community can be a little unforgiving at times.

Regrann and Canva are really fun apps if you wish to get more creative with your social network posts. These apps are considered essentials for both casual and expert users.
